Hosted by the editors of SPROUT, we invite you to join us to listen and reflect on the work in our third issue. We drew inspiration for Issue 3 from The Nature of Cities’ (TNOC) recent art exhibition, Shade, and invited contributors to draw on the exhibition’s virtual installation as a conceptual springboard to contemplate the theme of shade through a poetic lens. We asked poets to reflect on the role shade plays in the built environment, particularly focusing on shade equity—i.e., how shade can make more inclusive spaces in the city, or, conversely, how the lack thereof can create inhospitable, hostile spaces. For the launch, we have invited poets and mediators featured in the issue to share their work, as well as reflect on their approach to the theme and their treatment of shade in their work. As part of a moderated discussion, we will also explore the role of poetry as a mechanism to traverse intersections between poet, urban space, and the ecological, while also broadening our understanding of these intersections by establishing new ways of seeing, being, and meaning-making via the various forms and modes of poetic expression, practice, and engagement. We look forward to sharing the work in issue 3! To read the issue, please visit: https://sproutpoetryjournal.com/
