Love Poems in Time of Crisis
May 6, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Poetry can hold seeds of love in the audacity of its truth-telling, especially if truth-telling is a vehicle for survival. Our current condition feels like a crisis on many fronts: the traumatic consequences of the COVID pandemic, wars, incivility and surging hatred in so many forms, the degradation of the planet. In response, some of us have found themes of love to be bubbling up in our work in surprising manifestations, not just romantic love (although that, too) but also but also love of self, or family, or a stranger, or a community, or an ecstatic relationship with the Divine, or the natural world we inhabit. None of this investigative “work” in poetry is easy, but love is also risking and persisting towards a better future for community and selfhood. In this reading, four poets will share a range of their recent work, borne out of crisis, to explore what happens when love poems dismantle societal expectations to show the beauty in spaces of resistance.
Join us in person in Salem at the Mass Poetry Festival for a reading with Deborah Leipziger, Krysten Hill, Robbie Gamble, and Joey Gould.
Location: Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) Create Space, Salem, MA
